Budapest in 3 Days, 2 Nights: Danube Dinner Cruise + How to Book a Fisherman's Bastion View Room

After wrapping up Austria, we headed to Budapest — and across three days and two nights, nothing topped that Danube dinner cruise.

Day 1: A Fisherman’s Bastion view room

We checked into Hilton Budapest in a room facing Fisherman’s Bastion — a postcard view of the castle silhouette right from the breakfast table, no need to even leave the room. Worth it if your budget allows.

After dropping our bags we went straight for a massive bowl of beef soup and roast pork knuckle at Lánchíd Söröző, then wandered Fisherman’s Bastion in thick fog and stepped inside to see “The Holy Right Hand” — a slightly macabre but genuinely worthwhile relic.

Day 2: The classic yellow tram + Danube dinner cruise

Rode the classic yellow tram across the city, stopping by Liberty Bridge along the way. Lunch was at Pipa: foie gras with duck leg and a botrytis dessert wine turned out to be the most delightful pairing of the trip. In the afternoon we browsed Central Market Hall, then stopped at Gelateria Pichler Fagyizó for the local specialty, chimney cake.

We got back to the hotel just in time for sunset over Fisherman’s Bastion and the Parliament building lighting up — and then came the highlight of the whole trip: boarding the Legenda cruise for a four-course dinner while gliding past the illuminated Parliament and Chain Bridge on both banks. The best value experience of the entire Budapest trip — strongly recommend building it into your itinerary and booking ahead.

Day 3: St. Stephen’s Basilica + an unplanned ending

Breakfast in the room again, Fisherman’s Bastion still in view. Grabbed a pastel flower-shaped ice cream from a street stall as a snack, then climbed St. Stephen’s Basilica — a full panorama of Budapest, incredible on a clear day.

The Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial is solemn and quiet, right on the riverbank — worth a moment of your time. Dinner at Kiskakukk was proper traditional Hungarian food, and we closed the night with a walk along Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

The trip ended with an unexpected twist — a snowstorm in Zurich canceled our connecting flight outright, forcing a last-minute scramble to rearrange the rest of the trip. A dramatic footnote to an otherwise perfect three days — the full story is in the video. Subscribe to follow the rest of our European adventures!

The colorful roof tiles are from the famous Zsolnay ceramics factory, and during the Ottoman occupation the church was converted into a mosque.

Opened in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge linking Buda and Pest, championed by Count István Széchenyi — legend has it he was once delayed crossing the river and missed his father's funeral, which spurred him to build it. The stone lions guarding each end gave rise to an urban legend that the sculptor forgot to carve their tongues and drowned himself in shame — not actually true.
